Marvel Comics: Neophyte.

German boy with English name

Illustration from the X-Men.

Neophyte (Simon Hall).

Neophyte was first presented as part of a multinational group of Acolytes of Magneto and spoke some German words now and then. It was later, perhaps on one of the Marvel Handbooks, that he was given a civilian name. Instead of giving him a more German-sounding name, he was named Simon Hall. His powers were changed so that he no longer becomes one with the material he touches, being able to re-form himself in any part of that material's surface, coming from any angle and direction, making him able to travel long distances in a short time. He now has a phasing power that works just like Kitty Pryde's. I blame editors who pay no attention and do not care. I know I think this of the editors from the last ten years, but they have existed even before that.
